At least that's what you said

Round 35: February 2042 (Summer)
last update/Simon and Matthew's next update/next update
Lane 1 household profile

Linnea Lane is 82, Eliot is 56, Cordy is 49, Matthew and Simon are 17 and Charlotte is 13.
(Tim is 22, Aurora is 16 and Jacinta and Grace are 12)

Narrated by Charlotte Lane

Matthew’s been moping around the house lately because his girlfriend Aurora dumped him right at the end of the summer.

I thought it was kind of a shame. Aurora was always really nice to me and I doubt he’ll find another girlfriend that nice.

I tried asking him about it but he wouldn’t say much about it to me at home.

The curiosity was killing me though, so I asked Aurora what happened when I ran into her one afternoon.

Basically, Matthew kept making rude comments about Aurora’s future career (she wants to be a mechanic) and that progressed to him just acting like a jerk in general. She got sick of it, so she got rid of him.

I can’t say I blame her. Matthew deserves to sulk, if that’s what happened. I haven’t started dating yet but if I was, I wouldn’t put up with that kind of crap either!

The fact that I don’t have a boyfriend yet has been severely disappointing to Jacinta, who is kind of boy crazy.

I think she just thought that seeing I was a year older than her and Grace, I’d get a jump on the whole boy situation and have an in for her by the time she got to high school.

We started class this week though and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be for Jacinta. The boy situation isn’t nearly as exciting as she was expecting.

Not that stops her much. She’s totally obsessed with Grace’s twin brother Everett, along with my cousin Marcus.

She has a thing for both of my brothers too, as if they’re going to be interested in a 12-year-old!

I like school and everything but I’m kind of sad to say goodbye to our summer break as well.

This was my first summer being allowed to go out on my own, without having one of my brothers drop me off somewhere and it was so much fun.

A lot of those trips were funded by my grandma. Mum hates it but Grandma loves giving me money.

Mum told her to stop giving me so much but Mum isn’t home during the day and Grandma is. So it’s our little secret.

If Mum and Dad gave me more allowance, Grandma wouldn’t have to give me so much cash.

Mum says if it would probably help more if I didn’t spend what I’m given so quickly.

Mum and Grandma have always clashed but since she’s been living with us, it’s been a little better. Now, they’re mostly civil to each other.

Sometimes they’re even something approaching friendly.

Tim graduated a little while ago, so now he’s back in Sullivan, living with Mitchell and Eddie. He and Marius come over at least once a week for a family dinner.

He’s set for a really busy time for the next four years, once he starts medical school next month.

Marius will be studying too (architecture instead of medicine though), so they don’t think they’ll have a ton of time for anything else over the next few years or so.

Simon thinks Tim is totally nuts. He’s not even particularly thrilled about the idea of four years of uni starting next year, so voluntarily doing another four years of study is beyond him.

It’s almost beyond me and I actually like studying! I just can’t imagine being in school until I’m 25 or 26 or however old Tim will be when he’s finally done.

Mum and Dad are so proud though. I don’t know how any of us will ever top Tim becoming a doctor.

I’m not positive what I want to do when I’m older. Uni is a non-negotiable, according to Mum, so there’ll definitely be that. After that though, I’m not sure.

I have decided that I don’t want to be a figure skater any more. I think I’ll always skate as a hobby but I don’t want to go professional or anything.

I still love skating more than anything but I did my first big competition last year and it was a let down. It just wasn’t anywhere near as fun as I thought it would be.

Mum swam competitively before she started practising law, back when I was very little. I don’t even remember it.

She says she enjoyed it but she often talks about how she likes it much more now, because she knows she doesn’t have to do it. I think it could be the same with me and skating.

So I don’t want to go too hardcore with the skating. I’ll figure out something else to do as a job.

What I think that something might be changes with the day. I usually think I might be a teacher but I’ve thought about doing some kind of writing.

Or sometimes I think about doing something really crazy, like becoming an explorer or something. Even though I don’t actually know how you’d make money doing that.

Fortunately for me, I have tons of time to think about that.

Notes:
  • Title is from At Least That's What You Said by Wilco.
  • Simon and Matthew will both be off to college next year! Simon's SAS score was 50, which was higher than I was expecting. Matthew got a 59, so he'll pay half price tuition.
  • I ran the careers criteria on Simon and Matthew, so while I was at it, I did Charlotte too. She scored 5/5 for a number of careers but figure skating was not one of them. So I think she'll be doing something else when the time comes. Education is her LTW and she does fit that perfectly, so that's definitely in the running.
  • Politics, which is Matthew's LTW, is all wrong for him, so I'm probably going to ignore that LTW and pick something else for him. I have some ideas. :) Simon will be happy that he fits perfectly into the Music career, so he'll be following in his uncle Luc's footsteps eventually.
  • Next round, this family will be 75% female! It's been so guy-heavy for so long - that's going to be a change!

  1. The way Charlotte thinks about money ("if her parents gave her more allowance, her grandma wouldn't have to give her so much cash") cracked me up - it is so typical for a 13-year-old to think that way :-)
How did you make her grandma give her money? In my game, only a Service Sim can be given a tip.

    1. Charlotte is pretty entitled in general but yes, it's a fairly typical attitude for a kid her age!

I did use the tipping interaction for Linnea to give money to Charlotte. There's a cheat called allmenus on (you need to run your game in debug mode to use it, which sounds scary but really isn't!). It basically unlocks the vast majority of interactions in the game so you can use them on anyone. I use it a lot. Actually, Matthew's slouching on the couch at the beginning of this update is also from that cheat - the interaction is called "Veg Out".

  2. I like the perspective Charlotte gave on Matthew's break up; I remember reading Auroras update and how he was giving her a hard time about being a mechanic. And I wondered how linnea was giving her money, so it is another allmenus interaction. And Markus is going to be an architect, yay, I've been wondering about his career since the graduation post. Jacinta is really getting around to various updates, I see, but finding it difficult to find guys right now. This house really is on the cusp of change with Matthew leaving.

    1. Yeah, Aurora is very shy but I also think she can be assertive and stand up for herself when she needs to, so I didn't see her sticking around with Matthew for long. She was always very nice to Charlotte, so Charlotte's loyalty tends to lie with Aurora over her brother!

Oh, I thought I mentioned Marius's career in a previous update but maybe I didn't! But yeah, architect. It's his LTW, so I just went with it.

We'll probably see Jacinta at least one more time before the round is out, in Charlie and Camilla's update. But we'll see.

Both Matthew and Simon are leaving, so this house will be massively different next round! I won't know what to do with all the space!

  3. I loved Charlotte saying her grandma wouldn't have to give her so much money if her parents would just give her a bigger allowance, lol. It's all Eliot and Cordy's fault! ;)

Charlotte still has plenty of time to decide what she wants to do when she grows up, so it's good that she's exploring her options and not tying herself to one thing just yet.

    1. I know, those cheapskate parents of hers! I think that's the kind of logic a 13-year-old would see as airtight and pretty much everyone else would see as pretty faulty, lol.

It should be quite fun to see Charlotte develop her interests as she gets older. I'm really enjoying using the careers criteria more often, rather than relying on LTWs.

  4. Wow, I'm impressed with Simon's SAS score! I bet he was hoping he wouldn't get in so he didn't have to go to college at all.

Charlotte cracks me up. She reminds me so much of my nieces (ages 14, 12 and 10).

    1. Simon actually has the want to go to college! So I guess he'd be pretty happy he got in. But his parents are going to have some higher expectations for him now and he probably won't be so happy about that. ;)

I love Charlotte. I can't wait until she has a boyfriend to torture, lol! I think she'd be high maintenance.

  5. Ah Charlotte is awesome! I think my favorite age for her was definitely childhood, but she's a fun teen too. So sneaky with her Grandma giving her money, but really, aren't grandparents supposed to be a bit indulging? I could see it being a nuisance when Grandma lives with you though. Can't believe the boys will be off to university, and how awesome that music matched for Simon, that's awesome! The career criteria is totally fun isn't it? And figuring out their college scores too! I can't wait to do mine for this huge bunch of kids! And wow on the boys ranking so high! Very nice! And I absolutely adore Jacinta, crushing on all those males, and still wanting more choices!

    1. I'm looking forward to playing Charlotte as a teen some more. I think I'll have fun with her!

I think that's definitely how Linnea (and Charlotte) sees her role as Grandma at the moment but for Cordy, it's just another bone of contention between her and her mum!

I really love the career criteria but I plan to go in and fine tune them a little. I'm not totally happy with some of them, as there are some careers that almost all my sims seem to get 5/5 for (Business is a big one, Education is another). But for these kids, I like it. :)

  6. Charlotte is a real cutie and I love how she doesn't reject Grandma's attempts at giving her money, even when her parents aren't home. lol I also love seeing the elders in your game. :)

I remember the update with Matthew and Aurora discussing her being a mechanic, Aurora was right to dump him if he wasn't going to be supportive of her choice. Even if they are teens in love, he didn't have to be so harsh to her about it. The shot of him sulking on the couch was pretty amusing.

    1. Ha, no, Charlotte's not going to end a good thing before she has to! As long as Linnea is willing to give her the money, Charlotte is willing to take it!

Matthew thought uni would be a waste of time for Aurora if she was "just" going to be a mechanic afterwards but it's important to Aurora that she goes, so Matthew had to go. ;) He deserved to get dumped, I think!

  7. Matthew had it coming. Not feeling sorry for him, not one bit!

LOL. That is such a teen attitude: If you give me more money, I don't have to ask Grandma!

    1. No, I didn't feel sorry for him either! He's feeling sorry enough for himself anyway. ;)

Charlotte doesn't care where her money comes from, as long as she gets some, lol! If her parents did give her more money, I doubt she'd tell Linnea to stop the cash flow. ;)
