Lot tour: Sullivan High School, Version 3.0

So here it is - Sullivan High School, Version 3.0! Or maybe it should be Version 2.1, seeing Version 2.0 never really got finished (due to my hood going kaput) and this is based on what I had done so far and what I had planned if I'd been able to continue.

I always find layout pics pretty boring but other people seem to like them, so here's the first floor layout.

Second floor layout - the gymnasium is a two storey room, though there is nothing on the second storey at all. I just didn't want the basketball net poking into the floor of the second storey!

Third storey layout.

Admin area and hallway. The hallways upstairs are not terribly more exciting than this one, so I didn't bother with extra pics of those. Let me know if you want to see them though and I'll add some.

Australian schools do not tend to have nurse's offices but we do have sick bay. The people who work in the admin area are in charge of it and they are always trained in first aid. Sullivan is not in Australia or any other real place (which means I can ignore realism when it suits me!) but I tend to add in Australian things anyway sometimes.

Finn is the principal of the high school now, so this will be his office. The empty desk, if you're wondering, is for in-school suspensions. ;)

The staff room.

The cafeteria. One more reason I haven't set Sullivan in Australia - Australian schools do not have cafeterias (most kids bring their own lunch and they eat outside) but it is very convenient to have one in game.

Locker rooms. I want to recolour that bench in the same pink as the tiles. Will I be too lazy? Probably!

The gym, which is looking a little dark. Will have to add some more lighting. This is something else Aussie schools don't tend to have. PE is done outside.

Maths classroom.

Computer lab.

Humanities classroom - history, English, foreign languages, etc.

The art room.

The (very small) library.

The school hall, which...I am still playing with, really. I'm calling the lot done overall but this room isn't my favourite and it needs more work.

The science lab. I do very much like my science lab!

Textiles and Design, my second-most hated subject at school (first was PE). But I really enjoyed doing this room regardless. :)

Food Tech, a subject I only wish we had at my school! We didn't have the facilities for it.

The music room, which needs to be tested in game. I'm not positive there's enough space around all the instruments or if I could possibly fit a couple more in.

And finally, the woodwork and metalwork room!

Notes:

  • Hope you enjoyed the tour - I'm really happy with how the place turned out.
  • Forgive me for no story update this week! I kind of got on a roll with the high school and once I realised how close I was to actually finishing, I just wanted to keep going and get it done. :)

  1. Wow - this lot is so great, I almost wish I could have it in my game, putting my "no CC" policy aside :-) Love the staff room especially. And it makes perfect sense that the gymnasium is two stories high; it would be with higher ceilings than the rest of the building in real life, too.
Where do Australien school kids eat and have PE in winter? I am sure there must be some places where it does get colder for part of the year.

    1. Glad you like it! The staff room is way nicer than the staff room at my school, lol.

At our school, if it happened to ever be cold enough that we couldn't eat or do PE outside, we'd eat in the classroom. That's happened only once that I can remember but we also eat in the classroom when it rains. PE we could possibly do in the school hall (the chairs are always plastic, so easy to move). I'm honestly not sure what they do in areas where it gets cold more regularly than it does here. I actually looked up a couple of schools near snow resorts, out of curiosity. One had a map and they don't appear to have a cafeteria, a gym or a school hall. So I'm guessing they eat in the classrooms and for PE, there might be a community hall or indoor sports centre nearby that they can use but I couldn't say for sure!

  2. I was thinking the same question as Librarian? If i could play the same way as you do, if the school was available for download i would have it.

    1. See my answer above to Librarian but it's probably not very illuminating! Below freezing temperatures simply aren't very common in the major cities and the major cities are the places I know the most about. On the other end of the spectrum though, I have a friend who teaches high school in Wagga Wagga, where it gets very hot in the summer and they hold their swimming carnivals/meets/gala days/whatever you call them in the evening. They start at about 5pm and end at around 9. That was interesting to me, as swimming carnivals here in Sydney just take place within a normal school day.

Glad you like the school enough to want to download it but I definitely won't be offering it! Waaaay too much CC and it's the CC that makes it, in my opinion, so there's no point putting it up without it. My schools and my hospital are sort of special to me anyway, so I'm not sure I'd want to put them up, even if it was more practical.

  3. Carla, this is definitely just as awesome as an update! It looks so good! The science lab really is amazing looking, with such great details. Are those lab tables functional (for skill building or science hobby?) All your posters look so good; I noticed your Dewey Decimal ones and I really like the July 20, 1969 one of Armstrong taking the first steps on the moon. Every room looks so realistic, and you did it with quite minimal CC it looks like. The sick bay and the office look very realistic. This will be such a great place for your teens and wow, Finn's principal now?! But he's got to "babysit" for ISS, I guess.

    1. Glad you like it! I was stuck on the science lab and was sure it would be awful and then Starr mentioned the 2t3 conversion of the chemistry table, I downloaded it and then it all seemed to come together! I'm really happy with it now. As for the posters, some I made and some I downloaded from some megapacks of posters at various places (I can link if anyone is interested but they're all in the School theme board on my Pinterest).

Yes, Finn is principal now. :) Kendal is retired. I'm sorry but I have no idea what you mean by your last sentence. ISS?

    2. We call In School Suspension ISS, sorry about that. Since you also call it In School Suspension I thought you may use the same abbreviation. Actually, here in Florida, supervising ISS is usually the job of a dean or Behavior Resource Teacher so principals only have to step in when staff is short.

    3. Oh! No, I've never heard that abbreviation. The class I'm on right now is studying space, so my mind went right to International Space Station, which I knew wasn't right!

It's either the principal or one of the deputies that supervise the kids here.We don't have deans (not even sure what a dean is, versus a principal) and behaviour teachers only come in with fairly serious situations and it's on an as-needed basis - they're not on staff at the school. I had to have a behaviour teacher come in for one of my students once - we requested her in Week 2 and she arrived in Week 10. She was there for an hour, we had a chat and then she left. Never saw her again!

    4. Oh, that's funny, the International Space Station-- I would think of that too, if I weren't used to the abbreviation for detention. Your comment about the behavior resource teacher made me laugh. We had a behavior specialist come in because she insisted on doing a certain child's functional behavior assessment, and I don't think she spent much more than an hour over three visits to the school. It was pretty useless!

Deans here are not administrators, but their job description is to support positive behavior in the school and give discipline, consequences in the cases of unacceptable behavior. They do some mentoring and advising, and they are the ones who usually call parents and manage in school suspension. Are the deputies you are talking about law enforcement, like School Resource Officers?

Your school has prompted a lot of discussion about how schools manage their spaces and personnel. I grew up in school without cafeterias -- international type schools in the Philippines.

    5. Hmmm, deans sound very much like deputies (by which I mean deputy principal, not law enforcement) or maybe like assistant principals. But both are administrators, or executives, as we call them here.

As for law enforcement, we have youth liaison officers who will go around and visit various high schools in the area but there are not generally any police permanently on staff at schools. I read about one school recently which has two officers on campus, but they have massive problems with violence and the (relatively small) town the school is in has a huge crime problem in general.

Ah, I could talk schools all day! It's always really interesting to me how other people around the world do the same job I do in such different circumstances and environments. :)

  4. Awesome school, Carla! I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the no cafeteria concept. Cafeterias are so embedded in school culture here in The States.

    1. Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

We have cafeteria-style set-ups in other places (hospitals and some workplaces, for example) but not at schools. Even in those situations, they're sometimes called canteens. We have a canteen at school too but you can just buy food there - there's no seating or anything. You just take your food away and eat it elsewhere.

  5. Oh my god! It's so so good. I haven't started building the new Wellington High School and now I think I just won't. I'll send all my students to Sullivan instead, LOL! I can't even pick a favourite because everything is just so well-though and wonderful. I sound like a fan girl but that's just because I am! :)

    1. Ha, I started building Version 2.0 because I was so jealous when I saw Maisie's and...someone's? I can't even remember now. I just knew I wanted a new school, lol! I'm glad you like it - it should be exciting to play it now that it's all done.

  6. Ugh, this looks so great. I wish I was even slightly decent at building things and making them look like this. I love it so much. I need to do a slow take-out-and-put-back-in method since my building mode is being wonky even when it's not in debug mode.

I like that Aussie schools have PE outside but here in the northeast US, it's a little unrealistic since a chunk of the year is during the colder months. Even when it's not winter, the cold weather can stretch well into the majority of April (spring time here), which is likely to be either rainy, cold, snow, or all of the above. I imagine that it can be hard during the heat though but I guess it's something you might get used to growing up there.

You're inspiring me to work on new school buildings for my kids. XD

    1. I'm glad you like it! I'm sorry you're having trouble with your build mode. I hate weeding through stuff to find problem files! I would love to see what you do with your school though, if you get a chance. :)

Right now, it's unusually cold in Sydney, which is still not as cold as it commonly gets in your area. It's about 12C/53F at the moment, at 9am. Uncomfortable, maybe, but the kids warm up once they start running around and they're in no danger of freezing even before that. The heat is a bigger issue and is much more likely to be dangerous than the cold. We just have to work around it - shorter PE sessions, we try to take them out in the morning, before it gets too warm or we aim for a shadier part of the playground. When it gets up to 35C/95F, I personally say no way to PE but those temps are not an everyday thing. They're not uncommon either but PE is only once or twice a week and we can usually find a day or two of cooler temps to take the kids out in.

  7. Fantastic high school! You really did a great job getting all the classrooms their own personalities and great layouts. I love the food room, especially with the wall inside the counter, nice touch. I like the locker rooms too, and the way you did the different colored tiles. Your woodwork and metal room look fantastic too, mine is too small, and I barely use it unfortunately. I really like the science lab, and Finn's office, what a great idea for the desk for naughty students. I wonder who will be the first to get the opportunity to sit there.

    1. Heh, the wall column inside the counters was basically the only thing I could do with that area without it looking extremely weird! I'm glad it works as a cool design feature. :)

My woodwork and metalwork rooms are pretty small too. I think there should be just enough space for them to actually work in there though, so I guess it serves its purpose! The spare desk in the principal's office is just a snippet of my real life; we have one out in the hallway in the admin building at my school.

  8. Wow, this looks awesome! I love it! Looks like you put a lot of work and effort into designing it. I'd love to create something like this but it would seriously take me forever. lol And I love layout pics! Helps to give a proper view of the erm, layout, of the rooms and everything. :)

The sick bay made me laugh only because I remember the one at my school, it always smelled really medical. Hated going in there. lol Principle room looks cool, as does the staff room & cafeteria. I remember eating outside for lunch at school as well and because of the Aussie weather I always remember it being either boiling hot or freezing cold!

Love all the other rooms too, you've done an awesome job of adding the perfect clutter! :) Just to name a few I did art, pottery, metal work, at school. Loved pottery but yeah mainly did all arty subjects which unfortunately were not appropriate for what I'd end up doing in the workforce. Only did them cause I enjoyed them and thought they were fun. lol And to add, really disliked cooking and music at school, and maths! ;p

    1. This was months of work, on and off, so I'm glad everyone is responding so positively to it! It's nice to have it finally done. I'll probably start my primary school next but not for another several weeks. Still recovering!

Ha, I don't think our sick bay smells of anything in particular. But it's in a very high traffic area and is close to two doors to the outside, so any scents probably get blown away fairly quickly. I was uni-bound, so I don't think I did any really "fun" subjects! Well...Italian was fun for me but I'm a language nerd. It's not fun in the way an arty subject might be fun. I really wish I'd had the opportunity to do food tech, though I don't know how I would have fit it in!

  9. hello! I am quite late but this is exactly the school I've been looking for and it's perfect !! though, I may just be dumb but I can't seem to find the download link anyway p: do you know where it is located at? Thank you ! <3

    1. Hi! I'm glad you like my high school but it's not available for download. I built and decorated it myself and it's absolutely loaded with custom content and it would be much too complicated for me to go through it all to see which pieces can and can't be shared. Sorry to disappoint!
