Galen Clarke, 1938-2017

by Abigail Carmody, Summer 2017

Galen Clarke, lifetime resident of Exeter, died last night in his sleep of natural causes. He was 79.

He leaves behind his wife Georgette, 77, and 14 year-old grandsons Calvin and Troy. Galen and Georgette's son Samson died in 2005 after a long illness at the age of 32. Galen also had a son and a daughter from previous relationships and had an additional 5 grandchildren from them.

Galen Clarke was born in 1938 to Nelson, a city planner and Gina Clarke, a legal secretary. He grew up in Exeter with his two older sisters, Drusilla and Xanthia. He had a lifelong passion for fitness and developed a love of music after picking up the guitar in high school.

Grace

Round 18: Days 86-90

Narrated by Kendal Clarke

Just as Samson had walked out the door to leave for work, I went into labour. I screamed for Samson to get back in the house - not only was he missing the birth of his children but he had also left a pot of soup boiling on the stove!

Round 17: Days 81-85

Narrated by Kendal Kalson

I'm an amateur astronomer, so I'm usually outside with the telescope at night long after everyone else has gone to bed.

Landslide baby

Round 16: College
WARNING: Much longer than usual!

At the beginning of his junior year, James found himself tiring of dorm life and decided to move out on his own. With the intake of the new freshmen, it was getting a little crowded at Moretti Hall.

Round 16: Days 76-80

Narrated by Samson Clarke

Yes, of course I'm still angry at Dad. You don't just get over stuff like that. You're probably wondering why I'm still living in the same house as him then. Well, basically, I think he's the one who should be ousted. Mum is not on board with that though, so we're all still together.

Gunslingers

Round 16: Days 76-80

Narrated by Trent Kirby (this is a longer one that usual)

So I guess what most people do once they've graduated college is look for a job. I did that (I'm on the local soccer team) but what I was really looking forward to was hitting the bars. I brought Emil and my cousin Samson along for the ride.

Round 15: Days 71-75

Narrated by Georgette Clarke

Galen and I have been doing pretty well lately.

Round 14: Days 66-70

Narrated by Samson Clarke

Because my Dad is a rock god now, he brought home this awesome guitar from work! I can't wait until I'm old enough to play it. It's too heavy for me to even pick up right now, let alone play. But it does look really cool.

Women and unicorns

Round 13: Days 61-65
Galen thinks I don't know what he gets up to when I'm at work and Samson's at school. He's hardly discreet, so I don't know why he would assume that. Probably because I've never mentioned it to him.

I've known at least since Sam was a toddler but as long as he seems happy, I don't want to rock the boat. Sam is a very well-adjusted boy - he plays his violin and he brings his little friends home from school. He lives a very normal life. I don't want to do anything to upset that.

And he loves his Dad. I think it would break his heart if we broke up.

Crappy husband he may be but Galen is a good father to Sam.

And to be honest, as much as I resent Galen's cheating, I still love the guy too.

I've never actually seen Galen with another woman, so I can usually put it out of my mind when we're together. I can't help but be reminded of it when one of his many women has the nerve to call him at home. I certainly give them a piece of my mind then!

I'm sure it didn't stop them from dropping by when they knew I wasn't home though.

Sigh. I don't think this situation is ideal for any of us but for now but as long as it's all hidden from Sam and Galen has the decency to not flaunt his infidelity right in front of me, I guess this is the best we can do.

Notes:
  • Georgette does. not. care. about Galen's cheating. I thought it might be her Romance secondary (her autonomy is set to Spouse Only, if you were wondering) but no. Her jealousy setting is 2, which I believe means she should get jealous when anyone she's in love with cheats on her. But she doesn't. So I guess she's a stay-together-for-the-kids type of Sim.
  • Not an awful lot happened this round, which is why this is mostly Georgette's thoughts. Galen barely even had time to cheat! He actually did some work this round and got promoted all the way to Rock God.

Counting down the hours

Round 12: Days 56-60
Georgette had been the primary carer for Samson as a newborn but as he got older, Galen took a more active parenting role.

Tomorrow

Round 11: Days 51-55
Galen and Georgette have been experiencing marital difficulties (caused by issues known only to them) but are still together, at least for the meantime.

Galen and Georgette had both been somewhat distracted lately and it had completely slipped both of their minds that rent was due on Monday, not Friday. Claudius Atkins knocked on the door early Tuesday morning to collect payment. For once, he wasn't a complete jerk about it.

Apart from when they would sometimes meet in their tiny bathroom, Galen and Georgette avoided each other.

Galen would go up to the loft and play guitar...

...while Georgette ate a lonely breakfast downstairs.

While a pregnant Georgette (unbeknownst to Galen)was sleeping the day away...

...Galen was working out on the balcony.

Phoebe the Rosella seemed to be getting more attention that Galen and Georgette were getting from each other.

One night, that all changed. Galen realised Georgette was expecting and that he didn't want their child being raised in an unhappy home.

They started spending more and more time together from that moment on.

Unfortunately, Georgette was on maternity leave and Galen still had to work. Georgette found herself waiting outside on the front step most of the day, hoping someone would pass by that she could talk to.

If she was lucky, someone would wander by who had time for a quick game of chess with her.

Georgette was still napping a lot of the day, which left her too rested to sleep much at night.

It was on one of these sleepless nights that that baby finally made his appearance.
Galen was too tired to realise what was even going on!

They had already agreed on the name Samson Luc if the baby was a boy, so Samson Luc was his name.

Galen (finally) joined his wife in the nursery to celebrate the birth of their new son.

The celebration didn't last long, at least for Georgette. She was really enjoying her job as a paralegal but without warning, she was demoted to Legal Biller.

It was nice to be working with her friend Charlton again, who was still languishing as a Legal Biller but she couldn't hide her disappointment.

She moped around the house pretty much all evening. Galen had been demoted the same day but he didn't take it nearly as badly as Georgette. He was probably getting used to it, as he'd been jumping from Battle of the Bands judge to Roadie and back again for quite a while. He had almost given up on ever advancing.

Georgette did at least manage to pull herself out of her funk and attend to Samson when he cried.

Georgette had the day off the next day and she quickly realised that stay at home motherhood was not the right lifestyle for her.

There were only so many times a day the baby needed to be attended to. She was glad this was just her day off and that she had a job (albeit one she hated) to go back to in the morning.

Notes:
  • I really wish you could read Sims' minds. I have no idea what made Galen have a change of heart. I was all ready for them to divorce this round. Good news for Georgette and Galen but not such good news for Collette. If she'd known about the problems they were having, I'm sure she would have been hoping they'd break up. So I'm still not sure what will happen with Collette.
