Progress (and a possible solution!)

If you read the Notes in my last update, you'll know I was having some fairly frequent crashing problems with Sullivan. I have been pulling things out and testing the game since last Thursday morning. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my break from work!

It's been complicated by the fact that the crashes I was getting seemed a bit random, so instead of just loading a particular house or lot, seeing if it worked and then adding back more of my CC, I had to load several lots. My process was this (I crashed while doing all of these things at least once before I started testing):
1. Load Carmody-Moretti house.
2. Send Kimberly to Town Square and back again. Back out to the hood screen.
3. Load Nott House.
4. Send Lia to the library in her car and back again. Back out to the hood screen.
5. Load Moretti 2 house.
6. Send Aurora to my new teen hangout lot and then to Sullivan Mall and then back home again. Back out to the hood screen.

And that was each and every time I loaded the game. I've probably loaded the game somewhere around 40 times over the last few days. I'm pretty over it!

The folders that I crashed with were my Plate Replacements, Walls and Floors and my Sweet Down Low painting replacements. If I'm correct and I've solved the issue, the problem with the last two folders was that I had duplicates of some of the files in other folders (this is a fantastic, easy-to-use program if you want to check for dupes in your own game). I also redownloaded the Sweet Down low paintings just in case. With the plate replacement, I don't know. I guess it just corrupted on its own? How fun that files can do that for no apparent reason, right?!

Anyway, I'm too cautious to say I've fixed the problem but I did just manage to go through that whole checklist with all my downloads in (minus the plate), without any crashes or glitches. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to play for real. I have a couple of other things I'd like to try if this doesn't work, but they're all quite annoying. So keep your fingers crossed for me!

  2. I've gone through this so many times and it is so frustrating. I tried using the duplicate GUID checker in SimsPE with no useful results. Another duplicate file finder I used deleted things I didn't want deleted. I hope you figure it out. It is such a time killer.

    1. Yeah, that sounds like you might have been using Delphy's Download Organiser? I've seen people swear by it but I sometimes wonder if those people are people who don't pay much attention to what downloads they have, because it gave me false duplicates too.

I will be so happy if this is the end of this process for me - it's sucha waste of time! Thanks. :)

  6. Good luck. So much fun that files can just decide to corrupt themselves. XP

    1. I know, right? My play session didn't go as well as I'd hoped (though I did manage to finish it and write an update for it), so I'm still on the hunt for a solution.

  7. I hope this solution holds and that it was truly the culprit! After all that time playing with a slower computer and then finally having one that runs your hood like a dream, to suddenly have these issues must be especially frustrating!

    1. Thanks, Rachel. Sadly, whatever I did didn't fix the issue. :( I had more issues trying to play through the update going up today. I got through it, obviously, but not without a couple of crashes. Ugh. Very frustrating indeed!

  8. Your problem reminds me so hard of the crashing problem I used to have. It seemed like a CC problem as well, because it started right after I pus something new in, but it didn't stop after I took that specific thing out. Just like you it all seemed so random. I tried everything but nothing seemed the help.
The thing I did to fix my game, you've already tried, so I'm out of things to help, and I'm aware that I don't have given you a lot.

I really do hope you find something that fixes it!

    1. Actually, Tanja, you know what? I just checked that link you tweeted again and I hadn't done the data execution prevention thing. I think I must have taken a wrong turn last time I tried to do it, because I never found the right menu option. I found it just then though and did it, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I guess my problem has much in common with any random crashing problem. :\ It does seem to happen most often when arriving on or coming back from community lots though, which is interesting. And it wasn't happening when I first installed on this PC. I'm starting to think it's possible that it is my settings. I have great specs but I also have a lot of downloads. But we'll see if turning off DEP for TS2 does anything.
